A ‘Burn the Boats’ Moment Can Alter the Course of Your Life

Have you ever had a moment that makes your heart stop? I had one today.

My buddy Todd sends me a message. We’ve been working together for a while. We’re trying to think about writing, content creation, and social media differently. We both work normal jobs ... I think that’s about to change.

Todd stumbled on an interesting insight. You can make a decent living and never work a normal job again by selling $5 courses. Todd’s reactions says it all: “Mind going wild right now.” The same instantly happened to me. This is a ‘burn the boats’ moment.

“If you want to take the island, then burn your boats.” — Tony Robbins

Tony Robbins is the first person I heard use this term. The concept comes from the year 1519 when Hernán Cortés arrived in what was termed the New World. There were 600 men with him. Hernán ordered his men to burn all the boats they’d arrived on.

If you were the enemy looking at the fire in front of you, you were petrified. If you were the men burning the ships, you knew there was no turning back. It was do or die.
