There’s One Thing You Can Do in 2020: Embrace It

“Don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life.”

Congrats! You’re in 2020 and you made it. The millennium bug didn’t kill you, your follower count didn’t destroy your self-esteem, you have a pulse, you still have internet and you have air to breathe.

It’s a great decade to be alive. Your options for this decade are endless. Here’s a thought to ponder:

“Why is it that we spend so much of our time preparing for when we can do what we want, instead of just doing what we want right now?”
― John P. Strelecky, The Why Cafe

This is a powerful idea. And how do we embrace it? By embracing this new decade and experimenting with a few of these strategies which help us make the most of 2020 and beyond.

Do that one thing you have been putting off

We all have that one goal or dream that we’ve been putting off for a time that we are less busy. In this new decade, don’t put it off any longer.

Schedule one activity a week at a minimum that helps you work towards that goal or at least lets you participate in its obtainment. My goal has been to improve my public speaking game and in the last three months, that goal has been left behind. What’s yours?

Take action at the sight of a new idea

The idea of embracing 2020 is stupidly simple when you make a commitment not to leave the sight of a new idea without taking one action. Here are a few examples:

  • If you think of a social media post, write it down immediately in your phone
  • If you come across a book to read, email yourself immediately with a link
  • If you decide on an activity to do, put it in your calendar immediately
  • If you commit to making a change, take one action immediately

Whatever you do, never leave the sight of a new idea without first taking one action — it doesn’t matter how small that action is.

Live in aeroplane mode more often

It’s really hard to embrace the new decade when your phone’s notifications are vibrating and making noises while you’re trying to think and execute.

Notifications are the priorities of the companies behind the apps you use.

Put your priorities first by living in aeroplane mode more often this decade. Disconnect the WIFI and reconnect with human beings and present moment awareness. It will do wonders for you and allow you to embrace what it truly means to live rather than exist.

Write your thoughts down into lists

Lists of thoughts are great for sorting ideas and working out what you’re going to do. I regularly sit down and write lists and find it therapeutic. A few examples of lists I write are:

  • Lists of article headlines
  • Lists of holiday destinations
  • Lists of books
  • Lists of business lessons
  • Lists of my fears

There are so many lists one can write and you can return to them whenever you see fit.

Tackle something that scares you

We’ve all got boogie monsters that wake up our minds in the middle of the night and scare the crap out of us. What scares me is extreme thoughts and on some days, public speaking in front of large audiences.

In this next decade, I’m going to tackle more of these fears. When the presentation in front of a new client is given to me, I’m going to do it with a smile and do my best. When I’m asked to speak about a difficult topic like mental illness in front of an audience, I’m going to say yes.

And when I finally run into that terrible boss that treated me like dirt, I’m going to use every bone in my body to be kind and say hi.

Set up experiences you can look forward to

Pre-planning experiences for the future helps you to start extracting the joy today. I have booked Greece for next year and already I’m dreaming of beautiful beaches and dinners in Santorini.

You can plan dinners, outdoor activities, movies to watch, books to read or any task that brings you joy. Every moment leading up to the activity will help motivate you towards today’s goals and embrace the present moment.

Whatever you do, make this decade better than the last

“Don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life.” — Robin Sharma

All you can do with this new decade ahead of you is to embrace it. Embracing life can be summed up in the following ways:

  • Make time for the people you love
  • Chase those wildly audacious goals
  • Do things that scare you
  • Back yourself
  • Take daily action — and right after you stumble upon a good idea
  • Live like you’ll die tomorrow
